- Viruses.
Virus is a program code or script that attaches itself to existing program files and tries to spread itself over computers and networks without user's consent. The presense of malicious or destructive code is not essential to consider the program a virus. However, viruses often content malicious, or unwanted functionality as well.
- Worms.
Worms are a variety of viruses. Unlike the regular viruses, worms are standalone programs, that try to spread among the internet and local networks. Presense of destructive code is not essential in worms, but the side-effects of their activity can be very harmful, due to heavy net traffic and other issues.
- Trojans.
Trojans, or "Trojan horses" are the most dangerous kind of malware. Trojans are often attached to various freeware or shareware software, that appears to perform desirable functions, but in fact behaves as malware, stealing private data, or giving the hacker a control over your PC, that can lead to dramatic data damage loss.
- Spyware.
Spyware, as follows from the term, is a software that is spies over you. What does it mean? Spyware tracks your internet activity, the history of your web-browsing, online-shopping etc. Then it sends the collected data to the malefactor, that can use it for his own interest, as well as against you.
- Backdoors.
Backdoors behave much similar as worms and trojans, except that they do something special: they open a kind of "backdoor" onto a computer, providing a network connection between your computer and hacker's one. Guess what happens then...
- Exploits.
The target of exploits are security holes in popular software. Successful exploit can give a hacker a chance to run any program on victim's computer.
- Rootkits.
Rootkit is a type of malware that hides itself in system's core processes and is the hardest of all malware to detect and to remove. Most regular signature-based antivirus software are unable to detect rootkits, due to technological limitations. - Keyloggers.
Keylogger is a program that tracks what you type on your keyboard, and sends this information to the hacker via internet or email. A great tool for stealing passwords and other personal information.
- Dialers.
Dialers are an outdated type of malware, because very few computers are equipped with modems nowadays, however, if you are using modem, you shoul be aware of this threat. Dilers use modem to call from your computer where they need to. For example, that may be hacker's computer, and the call may be used to transmit stolen private data.
- URL injectors.
This malware substitutes certain URL's that you type in you browser by the given one. This common use for it is generating affiliate traffic for advertising web-sites.
- Adware.
Adware is the least dangerous threat - it displays advertisement on your computer. Adware is often a subset of spyware.
